More College Graduates Take Public Service Jobs

As job hunts became tough after the crisis, anecdotal evidence suggested that more young people considered public service. Exactly how big that shift was is now becoming clear: In 2009 alone, 16 percent more young college graduates worked for the federal government than in the previous year and 11 percent more for nonprofit groups, according to an analysis by The New York Times of data from the American Community Survey of the United States Census Bureau. A smaller Labor Department survey showed that the share of educated young people in these jobs continued to rise last year.

Barcelona [...] announced plans to return to the United States for their summer tour in 2011. The Spanish champions carried out their pre-season campaign in Asia earlier this year after spending 2008 and 2009 in the USA.

Pep Guardiola's men will cross the Atlantic to play three games in July and August. Prior to that, Barça will play friendlies in Germany and Croatia against as-yet unknown opponents with the debt-ridden club estimating the matches will bring in over €6m in income.

Four NETS for Better Searching

The perfect page is out there somewhere. It's the page that has exactly the information you're looking for and to you it's beautiful and unattainable like a faraway star. If only you had a super-sized net for capturing it!

Most people use a search engine by simply typing a few words into the query box and then scrolling through whatever comes up. Sometimes their choice of words ends up narrowing the search unduly and causing them not to find what they're looking for. More often the end result of the search is a haystack of off-target web pages that must be combed through. You can do better than that, and that's what this page is about.
The most comprehensive engine out there at the moment seems to be Google, and that's what we'll focus on here. The first step in becoming a facile catcher of web pages is to master Google's Advanced Search form located at http://www.google.com/advanced_search. Bookmark it! Drag the bookmark to your browser's toolbar so that it's always available.

His father told him the story of the father of the Reformation, Martin Luther, and said that both of them now should have his name.
On 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks, an African American woman, refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger, and as a result she was arrested for violating the city's segregation law. Activists protested and organised a boycott of the buses for one day and chose Martin Luther King, Jr. as their leader. This protest continued until the buses became desegregated. Under this time, about a year, Martin Luther King, Jr. was constantly harassed with death threats and bombing of his house.

If you like science fiction, I recommend you the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov (intermediate to hi-intemediate level reading). "In many ways, the Foundation [trilogy] is unique as a science fiction novel. The focus of the books is certainly the trends through which a civilization might progress, specifically seeking to analyze how they might progress over time, using history as a precedent. Although many science fiction novels such as Nineteen Eighty-Four or Fahrenheit 451 do this, their focus is upon how current trends in society might come to fruition, and act as a moral allegory on the modern world. The Foundation series, on the other hand, looks at the trends in a wider scope, not necessarily looking at what the societies change into, but how they change and adapt." [Read more].

Ray and Halloween

Para este autor, Halloween fue un hecho muy importante de su niñez y juventud, lo cual quedó reflejado en gran parte de su obra literaria. Ray afirma que necesitamos símbolos, ceremonias, y obras de arte que nos ayuden a aceptar la "realidad intolerable de la muerte".

Si querés vivir el espíritu de Halloween con la magia de Bradbury, te recomiendo "The October Country", un libro de cuentos, que está en la biblioteca en la sección Fiction. Su lectura requiere un nivel de inglés hi-intermediate. Otra opción del mismo autor es "The Halloween Tree", cuya lectura es más sencilla.

Experiencing American culture

Tal vez hayas pensado en viajar a los Estados Unidos para conocer su cultura. Si te interesan los intercambios culturales en Estados Unidos, podes encontrar información valiosa en los siguientes programas.

Programas para estudiantes secundarios (en inglés). A través de programas de intercambio a nivel secundario, estudiantes de otros países cursan un semestre o un año escolar completo en escuelas secundarias públicas o privadas acreditadas. Durante su estadía, los participantes viven con familias estadounidenses o residen en escuelas con internado. Pueden participar chicos de entre 15 y 18 años y medio (al momento de iniciar las clases).

Programa Au Pair (en inglés). A través del programa Au Pair, jóvenes extranjeros entre 18 y 26 años participan directamente en la vida de una familia anfitriona encargándose del cuidado de niños durante un período de hasta 12 meses. Las tareas involucradas en el cuidado de los niños no pueden insumir más de 10 horas diarias, hasta un máximo de 45 horas semanales, y por ellas se recibe un salario. Los participantes deben dominar el inglés, y además de sus tareas, realizar estudios en instituciones de nivel terciario.

Programas de trabajo de verano (en inglés). Programas para estudiantes de nivel terciario-universitario que permiten trabajar y viajar por los Estados Unidos por un máximo de cuatro meses durante las vacaciones de verano. Típicamente, los participantes trabajan en centros de vacaciones, hoteles, restaurantes y parques de diversiones.

Programas de consejeros para campamentos (en inglés). Los consejeros de campamentos interactúan directamente con chicos estadounidenses en campamentos de verano, por un plazo máximo de hasta 4 meses. Pueden participar estudiantes universitarios, trabajadores sociales especializados en jóvenes y otras personas especialmente calificadas, mayores de 18 años.

Programas de intercambio del Departamento de Estado (en inglés). La División de Progamas para Jóvenes de la Oficina de Asuntos Educativos y Culturales del Departamento de Estado trabaja para establecer lazos duraderos entre los Estados Unidos y otros países a través de programas de intercambio y asociaciones institucionales. Los programas están dirigidos principlamente a estudiantes de nivel secundario y promueven el entendimiento mutuo, el desarrollo de liderazgos, la transformación educativa y los ideales democráticos.

Para hoy tarea. ¡Y pensar que querías encontrarte con tus amigos! Pero lo cierto es que conviene hacerla porque de esa forma uno puede aprender y prepararse para el futuro. En cuanto a los homeworks que te puedan dar en el instituto o en el colegio, a veces es imprescindible consultar diccionarios, enciclopedias, bases de datos, etc., ya que nadie pretende que sepamos todo de todo.
